During the British Raj in India, struggle for achieving democratic rights of the Indian people was built up under the leadership of as great a man as Rabindranath Tagore. British Raj denied those rights but the common people took part in the Freedom Struggle with a dream that, all those rights will be achieved in independent India. But the rulers of independent India took to the same path as that of the British rulers and has trampled down nearly all the democratic rights one after another. Eminent persons from different walks of life all over the country came forward in protest against such oporessions. With an objective to spread this movement in all the states, a magnifcant conference of democracy was held on 4th October, 1983 at Raja Subodh Mullick Square in Kolkata. Eminent journalist Kuldip Singh was present as the Guest-in-Chief in this conference. Other eminent persons remaining present in this programme included jounalist Dakshinaranjan Basu, eminent physician Dr. Nihar kumar Munsi, Arabinda Basu, ex Vice Chancellor of Jadavpur University, Agnijug revolutonary Nikunja Sen, Prafulla Kumar Sen, writer Sailes Dey, Kapil Bhattachayya, mass leader Manik Mukherji and others. From that very conference 'Committe for Protection of Communal Harmony, Democratic Rights and Individual Freedom' was born. In continuity of that very endeavour Centre for Protection of Democratic Rights and Secularism (CPDRS) has developed.
